About Us
The primary objectives are to support programmes in poor countries within the areas of development co-operation, human rights, peace- and reconciliation work and emergency relief; to motivate the Catholics in Norway towards developing solidarity with the economically poor in other countries, and to increase awareness of unjust social structures and the causes of poverty. Domestically, the most important role is to aid the parishes in the development of welfare work for refugees, immigrants, children and the elderly. Caritas’ work is based upon the teachings of the gospel and the Catholic Church’s social doctrines. The gospel challenges us as Christians to engage with the world. The Second Vatican Council underlined the obligation of the Church to play an active role in our world today. The Church – and we as members of the Church – cannot stand by indifferently whilst some become progressively richer, and others are denied the opportunity to live a live with dignity. The Church emphasises that poverty is a circle that must be broken. The situation today is such that global justice presupposes a global “redistribution”. In the fight against poverty, two strategies must be adhered to. We must alleviate the need existing today with emergency relief and long-term development co-operation, and we must work to change the unjust world order, which favours the few, and allows the majority to suffer. Caritas wishes to contribute to this “redistribution”. We wish to play a role in changing the world. We achieve this through our partnership in the international network of national Caritas-organisations; Caritas Internationalis. As brothers and sisters in solidarity, we work for the common good through our development projects in poor countries, and through our advocacy work in both North and South. The Church always stands on the side of the poor. Caritas is one of the Church’s tools in working for the poor. The world must be developed. Communities must be developed. The starting point for both Caritas and the Church is that man must be developed. For this reason we work from grass roots level – in order that people will be able to develop themselves.
